The Hillman Foundation awards The Sidney Prize as a monthly journalism award, presented to journalists who investigate issues of social justice and public policy reporting in their articles published during the preceding month. This prize aims to promote ethical investigative journalism for common good; awards are offered both in North America and Europe.

This prize was established through the bequest of Addison Brown, LL.B 1855 and is funded through a gift to the Law School by his family members Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Hollander of Baltimore, Maryland USA in memory of their tireless efforts on behalf of African-American equal rights and long-standing leadership within private and public philanthropic organizations. It will be awarded annually to any student writing a paper on any topic concerning civil rights, civil liberties, socioeconomic welfare advancement.

Winners of our Spring Award Meal are invited to attend an award dinner hosted by Interim Dean Goldberg, members of the von Klemperer family, and invited faculty. At this event, each winner student should give a brief lecture about his or her work at this gathering.

This prize is awarded annually to an undergraduate writing piece in English that best approximates Sidney Cox’s high standards of originality and integrity, as stated in his book Indirections for Those Who Want to Write. Any form of undergraduate writing may be submitted; fiction, non-fiction and poetry submissions alike can all be accepted; collections of short poems may even be submitted as one manuscript submission.

In 2024, Bridget Morrison from Say was honored with this prize; this year it will go to an emerging creative working in short film from NSW with a cash prize of $7,000. The Sydney UNESCO City of Film prize honours an exceptional practitioner whose work stands out for innovation, imagination and high impact; Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award provides recognition of those at early stages in their careers.

The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is an prestigious annual award organized by Overland and supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, seeking excellence in short fiction up to 3000 words on any theme related to travel; creative interpretation is encouraged. The winning author receives $5000 plus their story will be published in Overland magazine; two runners-up each receive $750 as prizes.

Entry deadline is 11:59pm AEST on Monday 5 November 2024, and entry fees are non-refundable. Prize money will be determined based on ACF ratings – these awards must be distributed among at least 6 players in each division; otherwise they will be shared equally among tiebreakers; non-rated players are ineligible for rating prizes; any surplus prize money may be increased accordingly.
