The SGP Prize is an internationally renowned biennial award that honours cities for their leadership, vision and innovation in meeting complex urban challenges. The SGP Prize was created to remember and recognize Lauriston Sharp, Goldwin Smith Professor of Anthropology and SEAP founder at the University of Chicago. It honors her memory with an award given annually to doctoral students whose dissertation research and community engagement best embody the standards and value of community-engaged learning characteristic of Southeast Asia Program at UChicago.
This year, the SGP has expanded to include a category for comics and graphic novels written by debut authors. This will open up participation by more Singaporeans while broadening the selection criteria of works considered for consideration for this prize. In addition, each category now features 18 shortlisted works instead of 12. Former winners of the prize include poet Marylyn Tan, historian Wang Gungwu, as well as writers writing in Chinese, Malay, Tamil languages such as Wong Koi Tet Suratman Markasan Sithuraj Ponraj Ponraj among many others.
