The South China Morning Post and its journalists have won 12 prizes at this year’s Hong Kong News Awards ceremony, including three top honors in two of three categories – City Desk for its investigations into unauthorised structures added to luxury properties and Arts Team for another. Their investigations also earned accolades as Best Scoop and Most Promising Journalist Awards respectively.

As part of its efforts to foster Hong Kong’s scientific and technological atmosphere, BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize was introduced in February 2013. This award recognizes Hong Kong’s most outstanding scientific researchers and research institutions – helping attract global talent while cultivating forward-looking scientists into world-class scientists that help make Hong Kong such a dynamic center.

Professor Fan Shun-yan of The University of Hong Kong won this year’s BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize for his groundbreaking research on fibrosis – an abnormal thickening and scarring of tissues due to long-term inflammation, leading to loss of function; while Dr Michael Wong of CUHK won for his ground-breaking work in cellular therapy; which involves harvesting cancerous cells harvested from patients. Their accomplishments have elevated Hong Kong’s international standing within their fields while garnering worldwide interest.

Dr Fan’s article entitled, “Health Inequality Experienced by Socially Vulnerable Populations during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Hong Kong: Interaction With Health Service System”, was one of the most downloaded articles published in HKJ over the last year and explored how different groups respond to an epidemic using different coping strategies and health care services, while showing how social inequality affects public health policy making processes.
