The NUS Prize for 2023

NUS Singapore History Prize was introduced this year thanks to an anonymous donor’s endowment fund of $50,000 donated to its department. Kishore Mahbubani of NUS Asia Research Institute’s distinguished fellow Kishore Mahbubani proposed this award as an idea in his Straits Times column; he stated that nations are held together through shared imagination rooted in history; the prize aims to enlarge this narrative worldwide through non-fiction or fiction works which explore Singapore’s rich story; submissions may come from anywhere worldwide so long as they contain historical themes or focus specifically on Singapore’s unique history. This year’s award ceremony will take place at the Ritz Carlton Millenia in Singapore on 30 September. It will bring together influential individuals from different niche industries who have raised the standards in their respective fields, to commemorate their successes and encourage others to strive for excellence.

NUS boasts a distinguished alumni community comprised of Nobel Laureates, Heads of State and Government as well as business leaders renowned for their contributions to society. NUS takes great pride in the legacy left behind by past and current graduates through their accomplishments – as evidenced by past and present alumni achievements.

Christopher Bathurst KC was an eminent commercial barrister from London who established an extensive practice in Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore. He became a beloved member of Singapore legal circles, contributing significantly to shaping commercial law landscape there. Additionally, he served Fountain Court Chambers and served as senior counsel of Singapore Supreme Court.

More than a decade since its inaugural awarding, the Singapore Prize remains an esteemed distinction in legal education. Today, it stands as one of the highest honors a student may be presented.

On Oct 29th, 121 Asian and SEA Games medallists collected nearly S$2.3 million at Timbre+ One-North for participating in the Major Games Award Programme presentation. Sprint queen Shanti Pereira took home S$315,000 thanks to her gold and silver medals at Hangzhou China and two SEA Games golds won in Cambodia. Other recipients were men’s and women’s hockey teams; women’s synchronised swimming pairs; gymnastics teams; volleyball teams and badminton squads among many more medal winners than expected!
